FROM: VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND

CPT Raymond F. (Footsie) Whitby III was born in Wiesbaden, Germany to Raymond F. and Shellie Barfield Whitby of Leesville, SC, while Mr. Whitby was serving in the US Armed Forces. CPT Whitby was a 1970 graduate of The Citadel and an Army Aviator. During his service in Vietnam, CPT Whitby's duty assignments included 135th Assault Helicopter Company from November 1971 - February 1972, and the 120th Attack Helicopter Company from February - October 1972. His duty locations consisted of Di An and Long Binh. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Civic Action Medal. He passed away in Washington DC January 28, 1979. CPT Whitby is survived by his widow, Mrs. Janet Whitby Bates, his daughter, Suzanne Whitby Rivers and his three grandchildren, McRae, Brayden, and Eliza-Gray.

Editor's Note: Footsie was a Business major and a proud member of "K" Company...a corporal, SSgt, and 1LT, The Sphinx Staff, The Wesley Foundation, Gymnastics Club, Sigma Delta Psi, and the Rod and Gun Club. The Raymond F. Whitby Scholarship is in his memory.
