George Alan (Bubba) Martin, Sr., age 63, of 141 Roanoke Road, Liberty, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Rainey Hospice House. 7th generation Marion County, Mr. Martin was the son of the late George Onsby and Margaret Tanner Martin. He graduated Marion High School in 1966 and The Citadel Class of 1970. While at The Citadel, Bubba achieved company rank as the # 1 cadet his sophomore year (Guidon Corporal) and junior year (First Sergeant). Selected Battalion Executive Officer (Cadet Major) his senior year, he attained Gold Stars, the Dean's List, and top 10 of the 2000 man Corps of Cadets. Other honors included Sword Drill Team, Chairman of the Beach Committee, Vice Commander of the Arnold Air Society, and Senior Board Director. After receiving the top rank in the Air Force ROTC program, he served as an officer in the US Air Force. For 17 years, Bubba was one of IBM's most highly awarded salesmen before joining Earle Youngblood State Farm Agency in Pickens the past 21 years. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a former member of the Pickens Rotary Club. Surviving are his wife, Pam Youngblood Martin; three sons, George Alan (Lan) Martin, Jr. and his wife Jessica of Dagsboro, DE, Jason Earle Martin and his wife, Kelle of Powdersville, and Justin Bradley Martin of Pickens; a sister, Cheryl Martin Morris and husband, Joe, of Columbia; eight grandchildren: George Alan, Jack, Josie, Wes, Jacob, Evan, Lynda, and Madison Martin; his father and mother-in-law, Earle and Betty Youngblood of Pickens; and brother-in-law, Danny Youngblood and wife Lynn. Memorial Services will be 4:00 PM Friday ay Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens with the Reverend Jimmy Dillard officiating. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall from 2:30 PM to 3:45 PM Friday prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church (New Children's Playground Fund), 309 E. Cedar Rock Street, Pickens, SC 29671. The family is at the home.
