From The Citadel Alumni Deaths:

Clarence S. Matthews, 63, of St. Stephen, husband of Barbara Almers Matthews, died Monday, August 15, 2011, at his residence. Clarence was born February 9, 1948, in Karlsruhe, Germany, son of Clarence Matthews and Leony Fussle Matthews Thigpen. He was a civil engineer, receiving a Bachelors Degree from the Citadel and Masters Degree from Georgia Tech. He was an employee of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 10 years and the city of Charleston for 10 years prior to opening his own business, Alchris Engineers. A member of Bethel Methodist Church, he always enjoyed playing the piano for the children. Surviving in addition to his wife, are his step father- R. Murray Thigpen of Florence; a son- Christopher Matthews and his wife, Shannon, of Charleston; a daughter- Allison Selander and her husband David, of Charleston; two stepsons- Tony Moody and his fiance, Tanya Joye, of St. Stephen; and Rhett Moody and his wife, Rhonda, of St. Stephen; 2 sisters- Susie Kairis of Florence; and Victoria Walker and her husband, Lew, of Jacksonville, FL; 2 brothers- Rick Thigpen of Pageland; and Bill Thigpen and his wife, Cheryl, of Columbia; 4 grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren; special family friends- Elaine Anderson and exchange student, Frank Zopp. His memorial service will be held in Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC, Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2011, at 2 O'clock. The family will receive friends at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 107 West Main Street, Moncks Corner, Wednesday evening between 6 and 8 O'clock. The family requests that memorials be made to Odyssey Hospice, 5964 Core Road, Ste. 603, N. Charleston, S.C. 29406-6087; or to Roper St. Francis Foundation, 125 Doughty St., Ste. 790, Charleston, S.C. 29403.
